The authorities in Burundi barred the UN employees from entering the African country after a UN report accused the government of abuse. Bujumbura also warned of a "plot" to harm the country before an international court.

The human rights investigators were no longer welcome in Burundi, Foreign Affairs Minister Alain Aime Nyamitwe said on Monday, adding that the decision was effective immediately.

The annual NRF Awards recognise and celebrate South African research excellence. Awards are presented to researchers in two categories, namely special recognition awards and ratings-linked awards. The special recognition awards provide a platform for honouring researchers for career achievements and contributions to knowledge creation and dissemination, as well as capacity development and transformation. The ratings-linked awards are given to researchers who have qualified for an A or P rating, as evaluated through the peer review-based NRF rating system. Several of UP's top researchers received recognition during the recent NRF awards ceremony.

Summary report: Conference on the Implementation of Modern African Constitutions: Challenges and Prospects

This conference organized by the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung under the auspices of its Rule of Law Program for Sub-Saharan Africa, in collaboration with the Institute for International and Comparative Law in Africa, Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria, South Africa, sought to provide a better understanding of the challenges to constitutional implementation in Africa so as to draw attention to the causes of regression in constitutionalism and endeavour to suggest solutions to the same.

Prof Christof Heyns, professor of human rights law at the University of Pretoria, was nominated in March 2016 by the South African Government as its candidate to the prestigious 18 member United Nations Human Rights Committee, and was elected as a member in New York on 23 June.

Concluding their second visit to Burundi, a team of United Nations independent human rights experts welcomed certain improvements in the country, but warned that the recent “calm should not be confused with long term stability,” and also called on all parties in the country to stop the use of violence as a political tool.
