Two SARChI researchers awarded scholarships for overseas research

Two SARChI researchers affiliated with the Professorship in International Constitutional Law have recently received prestigious European funding to support research visits abroad.

Kenneth Sithebe received a scholarship from the Foundation Study Fund for South African Students. This scholarship will enable him to travel to and conduct research towards his doctoral thesis at the University of Amsterdam for a period of six months, commencing in September 2017. His doctoral thesis is titled ‘International Criminal Justice and the Right to a Fair Trial, as a Human Right’ and is supervised Professor Erika de Wet (University of Pretoria) together with Professor Herman van der Wilt (University of Amsterdam). At the University of Amsterdam, he will be able to thoroughly research the right to fair trial in international prosecutions in particular on the African continent, and network with other researchers in the fields of international criminal law and international human rights law.

Earlier this year Jeanique Pretorius received a van Calker scholarship from the Swiss Institute of Comparative Law (ISDC) in Lausanne, Switzerland to conduct a three-month research visit from April until June 2016. This scholarship enabled her to attend the United Nations International Law Commission meetings held in Geneva from 2 May 2016 until 10 June 2016 and 4 July 2016 until 12 August 2016. She has also received a seven-month scholarship from the Deutscher Akademischer Austauchdiens (DAAD) to fund a research visit at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg, Germany from November 2017. This scholarship will enable her to conduct thorough research on her doctoral thesis which is ‘The protection of the environment in non-international armed conflict under international treaty law’, which is supervised by Professor Erika de Wet (University of Pretoria) and Professor Jann Kleffner (Swedish Defence University).

We congratulate them on their achievements!
