The Institute for International and Comparative Law in Africa invites you to a lecture by Prof Christof Heyns, UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions on
‘Papua New Guinea: A paradox of human rights’
As part of his mandate with the UN, Prof Heyns undertook a fact-finding mission to Papua New Guinea from 3 -14 March 2014 to examine the level of unlawful killings in Papua New Guinea, as well as to provide recommendations on how to prevent them and ensure justice and redress in cases where they have occurred. In this lecture he will describe the difficulties faced in undertaking such a mission, he will report on the extraordinary challenges and opportunities for human rights that he encountered in this country of contrasts, and he will present preliminary observations; these will form part of a full report to be presented to the UN Human Rights Council in June 2015.
